Soft Hyphens

Soft Hyphens or Optional Hyphens are set in Microsoft Word with the Shortcut [STRG + -] (control + minus).

They serve as an invisible marker used to specify a place in text where a hyphenated break is allowed without forcing a line break in an inconvenient place. During the export to PDF this information can be transferred and later on caught by TVT.

According to our documentation we don't recommend the use of Soft Hyphens.

The Soft Hyphens appear as "Soft Hyphen Warnings" in the Deviation List and can be deactivated in the Warning Settings.

They won't appear in the Deviation List anymore, but will still be visible summarized on the Report.

In some cases, the project setting "Leaflets with Special PDFs" can be helpful.

It can happen that TVT does not recognize the "Soft Hyphens" as Warnings, but as regular Deviations and they can't be deactivated.

As a workaround we recommend to alter the export settings for the creation of the PDF file.

Good experiences have been made with the standard settings for X3 Print PDFs.

Summary for Best Practice if you experience issues with Soft Hyphens

1. Don't use any Soft Hyphens in Word

2. Deactivate the Soft Hyphen Warnings in the Warning Settings. (We still recommend to check all occurrences of the Soft Hyphens visually in this case!)

3. Use the Project Setting "Leaflet with Special PDFs".

4. Use the setting "X3 Print PDF" for the creating of the PDF file in your DTP Software.
